Borowitz credits the cannabis community in his hometown of Gualala, CA with shaping the key parts of his identity. His message of cannabis liberation and access is clear in their song “Ganja Tree ” featuring Rootz Underground on the album Be Love.
Amplifying positive attributes of cannabis and speaking out against the old paradigms is a big
part of Borowitz’s music. He says, “cannabis really puts me in the moment and acts as something that can enhance a type of meditation. I love the beauty of the plant itself.”
Borowitz’s favorite strains are Sour Diesel and Berry White, and he loves being around growing plants too. He says their energy brings him peace of mind.
You can catch Thrive at Cali Roots Festival this year and Aaron Borowitz is touring across California while producing music for his girlfriend, Korazon.
Cali Roots Festival will take place May 25th to 28th in Monterey, California. The festival’s line-up features musical performances by major artists including Wu-Tang Clan, Michael Franti & Spearhead plus many more. The weekend fest will also highlight the work of cannabis and psychedelic inspired visual artists.
Kristy Lingebach is one such artist. She will bring her take on classical techniques demonstrated through acrylic on canvas strain portraits. Her work has evolved into a stigma breaking social awareness project known as CannaQueens.
“The name CannaQueens came from that idea of walking down the hallway and seeing the portraits of all the royalty with the little plaque underneath that say who they are and what family they are from,” she says, “and doing that for the ladies of the strains,” Lingebach says.
Lingebach was inspired to paint what she loved and created her first portrait of Purple Princess. She now has over a dozen strains painted in great detail. Many of her works are now digitized and made available as clothing products and home goods. Her goal is to have this artwork displayed in all kinds of spaces, stating, “I would like to take a page from Georgia O’Keefe or more classically show the plant and how beautiful it is. It’s not in this state, in the flower state, a drug.”
Creating this artwork around her young family has gotten rid of some of the intimidation and rebellious energy she experienced around cannabis as a teen. “My seven year old can walk in the room and go ‘that Girl Scout Cookie is so pretty’” she says, “when you grow up with it being like lavender and sage and poppies, which can be turned into other things, it’s not something intimidating but another helpful thing to so many people.”
Some of her favorite strains include Super Lemon Haze for cleaning the house, Velvet Glove for sleep, and Animal Face after a long day, stating, “it’s like there’s certain ones for everything. I try to show that with my colors too. It’s like that feeling you get when you smoke.”
