37% Of American Women Consume Cannabis, But Most Keep It A Secret From Parents, Children And Coworkers, Study Says

Date:

A recent survey conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of cannabis retailer MedMen Enterprises has found that more than one-third of American women aged 21 and above consume cannabis.

The survey, conducted from February 28 to March 2, 2023, among 1,020 women aged 21 or more, revealed that 37% of American women use cannabis, with more than one in four women using it at least once a month. The survey also found that women primarily use cannabis for therapeutic reasons, such as anxiety relief, better sleep, and pain relief.

According to information procured exclusively ahead of an official announcement, the survey also uncovered that the majority of female cannabis consumers keep their cannabis use a secret from their parents, children and coworkers, with 65% saying that there are people in their life who do not know they use cannabis. This suggests that stigmas around cannabis use still linger.

The survey also revealed that over 9 in 10 women who use cannabis (91%) purchase it legally at a dispensary. Additionally, one in three women who use cannabis (32%) spend more than $100 at the dispensary in a typical month, with 35% of purchasers preferring to shop with a female budtender. Women also prefer edibles as their method of consumption (57%), followed by flower/pre-rolls (43%), and vapes (39%).

Finally, the survey showed that, while 27% of female cannabis users cited no concerns regarding their cannabis use, 20% said their biggest concern is drug testing.

Karen Torres, chief product officer at MedMen, said in an email, “As a queer woman of color working in cannabis, I strongly believe that representation matters. From our new hires to our C-suite, and from our retail employees to our product mix, MedMen is prioritizing diversity and inclusion to ensure our organization reflects our customer base and the communities we serve.”

And she added, “We know first-hand from our female-identifying employees and customers that women are increasingly turning to cannabis for their health and wellness needs. However, it’s clear that stigmas persist and inhibit us from sharing our experiences freely. Fortunately, this research confirms that cannabis use has become a popular form of self-care, particularly among women seeking holistic solutions to help manage pain and anxiety, or to simply unwind.”
